I want to invite you to reflect on a simple question: What comes to mind when you hear the word ‘yield’? What stories, memories, or beliefs arise?
For many, the word ‘yield’ may bring up ideas of slowing down or giving in. In the context of self-discovery, could it be that yielding is about opening up to the journey within — allowing yourself to be guided by curiosity rather than control? You know the phrase, "enjoy the journey?" It’s well-intentioned, but I can't help but picture in my mind a person clenching their teeth behind a fake smile, pretending everything is okay—no matter how much discomfort or struggle they’re facing. It feels like a form of forced happiness, this quiet pressure to be okay even when things may not be. Yielding to self-discovery is about releasing resistance and embracing the flow of learning about yourself, moment by moment. Being you!
The Essence of Self-Discovery
Working on self is a gift in this life. So often, the energy behind self-improvement is rooted in beliefs of low self-worth, not enoughness, and 'needs to be fixed'. Self-discovery is an ongoing process of understanding your values, beliefs, strengths, and areas for growth to live authentically from that place. It's a journey inward, grounded in curiosity, mindfulness, and self-compassion. A deeper, more real inner-standing. When we yield to this journey, we allow ourselves to explore without judgment, welcoming whatever insights arise. It's not easy. It takes practice!
Steps to Yield to Self-Discovery
1. Cultivate Curiosity:
Approach your inner world with an open heart and mind. Ask yourself: What are my core values? What truly brings me joy? Journal these reflections to start mapping your path. Core values serve as a powerful compass and north star. So often, we live from values, principles, and goals/professions that were handed to us.
2. Practice Self-Compassion:
Be gentle with yourself throughout this journey. Yielding to self-discovery means honoring the imperfections and the progress without self-criticism. No shame. No condemnation.
3. Embrace Mindfulness:
Mindfulness is the gateway to self-awareness. And, as stated by Eckhart Tolle, "awareness is the greatest agent for change." Tools like meditation, breathwork, or mindful movement offer the opportunity to stay present and connected to your thoughts and emotions as they surface. Notice how they feel in the body and, in what way does sensation change over time.
4. Seek Feedback and Reflection:
Engaging in meaningful conversations with trusted friends, family, or mentors can offer insights you might have overlooked. Their feedback can be a mirror to see yourself more clearly.
5. Try New Experiences:
Stepping outside your comfort zone allows you to discover new passions, talents, and parts of yourself you never knew existed. Embrace the uncertainty, and be open to growth.
Benefits of Yielding to Self-Discovery
My Personal Journey
Yielding to self-discovery has not been a straightforward or linear path for me—it’s ongoing and often challenging. Right now, I’m in a space where I'm reassessing what it means to truly yield. I’ve realized that I have been holding onto certain stories about myself—who I should be, how I should show up—and it has limited my growth in ways I’m coming to recognize more fully.
In this season, yielding has meant surrendering more deeply to the uncertainty of life and letting go of the need for control. I’ve noticed how often I’m driven by a desire for certainty, for a clear direction, when what my practice has been asking of me is the opposite: to trust the unfolding, even when I can’t see where it’s leading. It’s uncomfortable and perhaps this is what it means to live by faith and not by sight.
What has been coming up more often is a sense of feeling scattered—how energy is being pulled in different directions by effort, desire, and attention. There are moments when I feel completely aligned, and then there are times when it feels like everything is happening all at once, and I’m struggling to keep up. Yielding, for me, is learning to be okay with that tension. To breathe through it, and to trust that in the letting go, something deeper is at work.
This is not yielding in the sense of giving up or backing down. It’s yielding in the sense of allowing. Allowing life to flow, allowing my own self-discovery to take its course, without trying to manipulate or control the outcomes. It’s vulnerable. It’s real. And right now, it's where I am.
